A Day at Andersonville

 Yesterday, for one last trip before school begins on July 30th, we visited Andersonville Prison in Andersonville, Georgia. I hadn't ever considered how close this was to us but looking for something to do, we decided to go there on a total whim. Eddie even took off work for the afternoon because he wanted to go as well. Not knowing much about it before we headed there, I honestly expected it to be a Civil War museum. We did do a little reading about it on the way up to learn what we might see. If you're unfamiliar, Andersonville Prison was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War. It's now a National Historic Site and a cemetery and is a beautiful area! The prison itself, when it was active, was extremely overcrowded with inadequate water and food and was terribly unsanitary. Of the 45,000 Union soldiers held there, around 13,000 died. Radium Springs, Albany, Georgia

 Recently, the boys and I had an amazing day hopping between a few new-to-us South Georgia sites. Radium Springs was a last minute choice after remembering that Will (who has just finished 3rd grade) learned about Georgia's Seven Wonders this year and it wound up on the list. It didn't take long to get there and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Next time we will take a picnic and explore for longer! You can get more information about Radium Springs HERE at the Explore Georgia website, but we were amazed at the beautiful gardens and the crystal clear waters of the springs. It would be a gorgeous location for a wedding or family pictures. My boys enjoyed walking around the springs and looking for fish and turtles in the water. (Let's be honest - they were also SUPER excited about the outdoor body weight workout area near the walking trails as well.) James was a little bummed that fishing and swimming are not allowed.
