The Market at Rutland Farms

We spent a fun afternoon at The Market at Rutland Farms recently. We stopped in just for ice cream, but also wound up purchasing a bag of goodies for the animals in the petting zoo! As always, we had a great time wandering around. We went mid-afternoon on a weekday and it was empty! Who else loves to visit Rutland?

Georgia Museum of Agriculture

  If you're a local South Georgian, you've already heard of (and probably visited!) the Georgia Museum of Agriculture (known to locals as The Agrirama {pronounced Ag-uh-rama}). If you're not from around here, you need to put this on your list of stops if you're headed south on I-75 toward Florida! Found in the heart of Tifton, the GMA is an amazing place to learn about life in the 1800s in South Georgia. There are several different parts to it and you won't want to miss any of them. If you arrive on a Saturday (the recommended day to visit!) you'll park at the Country Store and after buying your tickets, you'll head past the playground. You're welcome to stop and play as long as you want. If you're ready to get on with the tour, head down the sidewalk and board the Vulcan Steam Train (the train ONLY runs on Saturday - any other day and you'll pay and then drive yourself around to the village). Providence Canyon

We are still heading out on regular daytrips to learn about our "backyard" around South Georgia, but back in the fall we took a trip that is worth mentioning now for anyone looking for a fun, but more adventurous outing with small kids! Back in the fall, we daytripped over to Providence Canyon in Lumpkin, Georgia, to wrap up a project that Will was doing for his class. We stopped there several years ago, but the boys didn't remember and this time we hiked down to the canyon floor. If you have the time, it is well worth the trip! It's amazing Known to locals as the "Little Grand Canyon," Providence Canyon is a great display of our influence on the land (it's the result of poor farming practices). You'll find lots of foliage and wildlife. It's a pretty easy hike down and back and was a great way to spend a day!

Radium Springs, Albany, Georgia

 Recently, the boys and I had an amazing day hopping between a few new-to-us South Georgia sites. Radium Springs was a last minute choice after remembering that Will (who has just finished 3rd grade) learned about Georgia's Seven Wonders this year and it wound up on the list. It didn't take long to get there and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Next time we will take a picnic and explore for longer! You can get more information about Radium Springs HERE at the Explore Georgia website, but we were amazed at the beautiful gardens and the crystal clear waters of the springs. It would be a gorgeous location for a wedding or family pictures. My boys enjoyed walking around the springs and looking for fish and turtles in the water. (Let's be honest - they were also SUPER excited about the outdoor body weight workout area near the walking trails as well.) James was a little bummed that fishing and swimming are not allowed.
